Luccarini’s Dove Grey Cashmere Dress Coat, up close and personal!
Having answered the nagging
question as to why cashmere remains persistently expensive, I once again turn to
Nicola Luccarini who is the founder, owner and divine inspiration of the
high-end knitwear company that bears his name. His debut in America marks an
auspicious occasion, particularly for those seeking the best in cashmere. For
the two benchmarks of uniqueness and high quality that characterize his designs
come to us at prices far below those found at Brunello Cucinelli or Loro Piana.
The extreme sophistication and
femininity of all his designs speaks to Nicola’s innate understanding of a
woman’s silhouette, and his desire to dress his clients in timeless, and yet
modern outerwear that flatters us at any time, day or night. Our dove-grey, 100
percent cashmere, dress coat is an exceptional example of what I mean.
Bearing the marks of
bespoke-level craftsmanship, the coat that requires sixty hours or so of work by
the same artisan, is an A-line shape that drapes effortlessly over dresses or
snug knits and pants. This glamorous atelier coat has some unique modern
“flourishes” like the charming and whimsical, playful loops around the edges of
the slim fit sleeves, and the hem. A signature of the coat is the intricate
knit design, and the ribbon trim, carefully woven through the knitted cashmere.
Complex design in knitwear
requires great skill on the part of an artisan; but it is precise production
stages too that play an important role in guaranteeing the highest quality. You
see, before any garment can take shape, wool specialists meticulously transform
the spools of thread into bundles of yarn, each one then singularly cleaned and
hung to dry at room temperature. Once dry, to revive the softness inherent in
the cashmere wool, each skein is slowly and lovingly steam ironed.
Nicola shared that it takes five
bundles of pretreated yarn to make our dove-grey coat, and, I repeat, sixty
hours of handiwork on the part of one artisan. Given what is involved in
transforming raw yarn into this splendid, one-of-a-kind coat, perhaps it is not
such a daft amount of money after all! I think it is worth the investment.
How about you?
