When we think of “lo stile milanese,” or the Milanese style, two words come to mind: “independence”and “balance.” It seems like a paradox. After all, Milan is the epicentre of fashion and design for the world — a metropolis where one expects to see everyone parading in the latest fashions, accented extravagantly! But no!
Rather the Milanese have a style all their own, which is understated yet recognisable from metres away. It is a dress code that everyone seems to appreciate, but very few can define.
But what is the Milanese style? With Cristina, Milanese to the core and co-founder of T.I.C., we examined this topic just in time for the new photoshoot for the new collection 2022/2023.
“We Milanese, we don’t love excess, unbridled luxury, least of all the ‘keeping up of appearances,’” says Cristina. “We are ‘concrete’, solid people. A characteristic that shows up in how we furnish our homes, in how we get dressed. Balance, simplicity, comfort…these are the passwords, the order of things. This for us is true elegance. Fashion, ‘la moda’ is a suggestion, but only when it is logical, and not forced. It is a question of personality, and ours is rather independent.”
The Milanese dresses, not minimally, but almost. There is a classic phrase: “But no, like this, I look like a Christmas tree,” said while looking at oneself in the mirror before eliminating the superfluous. Then, depending on the mood, a play of colour unfolds, ton Sur ton, matching tones, or contrasting ones, but never banal. Perhaps one also dares to add a jewel, but only one or to add a bag, but always practical. Then off one goes confident in the choices made.

A La Milanese
Quando penso allo stile milanese mi vengono in mente subito due parole: indipendenza ed equilibrio. Sembra un paradosso se pensiamo che Milano è di fatto l’epicentro della moda e del design mondiale, una metropoli dove ci si aspetta di vedere chiunque vestito assolutamente all’ultimissima moda con accenti stravaganti. E invece no. La milanese ha uno stile tutto suo, understated, riconoscibile a mille metri di distanza. E’ un dress code che tutti apprezzano, ma pochi riescono a definire.
Ma che cos’è lo stile milanese? Con Cristina, milanese per eccellenza e co-fondatrice di T.I.C., abbiamo sviscerato questo argomento proprio in occasione del nuovo photoshooting in cui presentiamo la nuova collezione A/I 22-23.
“Noi milanesi non amiamo gli eccessi, il lusso sfrenato e tantomeno i travestimenti dell’apparire. Siamo persone concrete. Un aspetto che traspare anche dal nostro modo di arredare le case e di vestire: equilibrio, semplicità, comodità sono le parole d’ordine. Questa è per noi la vera eleganza. La moda è un suggerimento, ma solo quando è logica e senza inutili forzature. E’ una questione di personalità e la nostra è piuttosto indipendente.”
La milanese si veste per sottrazione. Con un certo senso ironico…la frase classica è <<no, così sembro un albero di Natale>>… si guarda allo specchio e inizia ad eliminare il superfluo. Poi, a seconda del mood della giornata, gioca con i colori, ton sur ton, oppure in contrasto ma mai banali. Osa. Un gioiello, uno solo… La borsa più o meno grande, ma sempre pratica…e via.
