A fews ago, we watched a show on Italian television during which Drusilla Foer appeared – an Italian performer and theatre actor – and espoused a revolutionary idea…to replace the word “diversity” with “uniqueness”.
“I really do not like the word diversity,” said Foer. “It simply doesn’t convince me; it has something of the comparison in its definition makeup.” Offsetting this insightful claim the stage actor added, “Let’s listen to our uniqueness… just to be sure that our convictions are not conventions”.
While the actor spoke this to add insight to the essential work of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts and beyond, we also saw this as a seed of inspiration for all people in the global community seeking inclusion and acceptance through their art and through self-expression. We could not help but draw parallels to the uniqueness we see presented by our artisans and their work, and how their unique vision and craft champions the positive, authentic side of us all.
For the word, “uniqueness,” represents the power of the individual, the quintessence of oneness. The uniqueness we all possess – fuelled by our varied cultures, experiences, and values – is the space where we share our beauty, ambition, and soul. Our uniqueness is a window into our convictions and talents, but also our fears and fragility.
One way we share our uniqueness is in our daily self-expression of fashion. Springtime – a season synonymous with renewal and reawakening – should pave the way for us to embrace the spirit and courage of our uniqueness versus holding fast to convention. Our Italian artisans, like our esteemed actor, share an openness with the world, a passion for inclusion, and a genuine respect for the freedom of transparency, which has inspired and influenced their contributions to our Spring Collection 2022.
While our artisans represent the Italian culture on the global fashion scene, their uniqueness shines through in this collection; it shines through in the flow of their handmade styles and the vibrant, varied colours and textures. Together, they offer us accessible, easy beauty; individually they offer us their unique spirit. Intuitively, we assembled accessories that reflect our values here at The Italian Collection – our eye for unique things and a value of less is more.
And so, we must bow to an Italian who inspired us, to the season of spring that has encouraged us to be still in our unique convictions, and to go forward and to always present a collection of which we are so proud.
