Let’s talk. How to be Milanese.

Indeed, what does it mean to be Milanese?  Cristina and Myriam certainly have their own ideas, but we decided to tap a native of our muse city.

Born and raised in Milan, Sofia practices law.  She is a mother of two who balances career and home.  She is an art enthusiast and loves to meander the city streets, always with an eye out for new things.  Sofia is comfortable in her own skin, she has a quiet confidence, and her individuality shines through.  She seems to care little about fashion “decrees”; instead, she expresses her sense of self-donning clothes, old and new with an elegance and style she can call her own.

TIC…Sofia, it has been said that the Milanese style is inimitable, perfection in motion, a way of dressing that stands out.  It communicates a certain “saper fare.” Would you agree?

Sofia…Yes, I would agree, but then again perhaps I am a little biased.  On the other hand, it is true that when one dresses with purpose, and for oneself, it is an authentic declaration that casts a unique “trademark”.  I feel it is a personal, intimate dialogue, between me and me, that gives an all knowing. In say, the colours that work best, the right length of the skirt, the right accessory – be it a necklace or a bracelet, or the shoes, so very important be they flat or with heels.  If it is an ensemble that is right, it sings to me.

TIC…Sofia what are a few of your favourite things?

Sofia…Too many to mention I’m afraid, however, a few of them have a very special place like a handmade leather shoulder bag in chocolate that seems to be my go-to.  And a fabulous brooch that was given me as a gift that I can wear either as a pin or as a pendant. I love the versatility of this piece.  My all-time favourite shoes are my slip-on mules, that seem to go so well with so many pieces. And a pair of stylish brogues that are so comfortable particularly as I promenade the city streets.  And yes, there is my cardigan in cashmere and cotton that completes every look.

TIC…Do you have a favourite outfit, and if so, how would you describe it?

Sofia…oh that’s easy!  I adore a tailored white shirt matched to a fabulous pair of jeans, or ankle length trousers.  Often, I would add a statement necklace, something perhaps a little vintage, and of course a bag, a tote, a perfect accessory that easily swings over the shoulder or can be just as elegant handheld.  Simple, elegant, accessible….

TIC…Simple, elegant, accessible…is this your Milanese style in a few words?

Sofia…Yes and I would add, “timeless,” because when one buys well, it is a purchase that will give and give.

We agree with Sofia, Milanese style, it differentiates, you can tell it apart, and at The Italian Collection, we aim to bring to the fore a way of dressing with accessories that are effortless, easy, and ever so elegant.
